When The Iron Curtain fell East German MZ motorcycles became available to the American market. The Motocycle Shop sold and serviced quite a few high quality MZ singles for our customers.  The Motocycle Shop sold this Rotax powered 500cc single in 1995 and maintained it through the past years. Its owner trade it in on a PIAGGIO MP3 and we are now able to offer this unique, high quality light weight bike for sale.  It has highway bars and oem hard bag and just 10,000 miles.  Even though MZ is no longer in business, sourcing parts for this Rotax engined bike have not been a concern.

The engine is an oversquare unit, an alloy cylinder having an iron sleeve with an 89mm bore, 79.4mm stroke, totaling 494cc. The four-valve head includes the sophistication of a belt-driven single overhead camshaft running on reliable ball bearings. A 33mm Bing carburetor feeds regular gas to the combustion chamber and its 9.2:1 compression ratio. At 7,000 rpm, the power is rated at 44 horses.

Gears run that power back to a 5-speed gearbox, and from there a chain links to the rear wheel—fully covered, we might add. This had been designed by engineers accustomed to utility, and an enclosed chain lasted a lot longer than an exposed one. A modern touch was the electric leg—backed up by a kickstarter.

A cradle frame holds the engine in place, with a box-section backbone holding the three liters of lubricating oil for the dry-sump motor. The swingarm provides mounting places for a pair of West Germany’s prestigious Bilstein shock absorbers,  For the 35mm front fork, Bilstein also provides the internals. A single disc Gremica up front and a drum brake at the back work effectively. These MZs are really a potpourri of European Union parts: Italian switchgear and disc brakes, a Bosch headlight, Nippondenso ignition, cast wheels from Itally an Engine from Austria and basic assembly and lots of parts from Germany.
